In the book “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton there are many dynamic characters. The character that changes the most in the book is Johnny Cade. The aspects that this essay will show are; how he is at the beginning, what events cause change and how he is represented at the end of the book. Firstly, Johnny starts off as a quiet suspicious person. In the beginning of the book Ponyboy describes Johnny as and I quote “If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and lost in a crowd of strangers, you’ll have Johnny” (p.11). This immediately makes you think that Johnny has had a rough time. It also states that “He had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes, and that beating he got from the Soc’s didn’t help matters” (p.11). It also explains that he gets beaten by his father and
. . . He says things such as “Shut up about …live with that?” (p. In the end Johnny realises that fighting is useless and he isn’t scared anymore. This essay proves that Johnny really changes a lot in the novel ‘The Outsiders” by Hinton. Near the start of the book he talks bout killing himself but when he is dying he knows that he doesn’t want to.
In conclusion it can be seen that Johnny is very much a dynamic character. Which is proved by this quote “You want to know…from our neighbourhood” (p. He also realises that death isn’t something that should be taken lightly but it is a shame he realises this just before he dies. He realises that he gave up his own life to save the kids and he isn’t sorry about it. All these things add up to make the scared, nervous Johnny that is known as the gangs pet. This is a real turning point for Johnny in the book because everyone thought he would use his switchblade but not kill anyone with it. He even is quiet and suspicious when he was around his friends, this has been caused by his upbringing and the problems he has faced along the way.
Many event’s in Hinton’s novel facilitate change.
